Cinnamon Supplements Guide
What is Cinnamon?
Cinnamon is a spice that comes from bark of trees that grow in India, China, Brazil and the Caribbean. It is the second most popular spice in the United States next to black pepper.
There are two main types of cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon, cinnamomum verum, is considered to be the pure cinnamon. Cassia cinnamon, or cinnamomum aromaticum, comes from China and is cheaper than ceylon. Ceylon cinnamon is very expensive. Most foods like breads and cinnamon rolls use cassia cinnamon.
Cinnamon is believed to have been used in a variety of ways for over 4,000 years. Many cultures have used it to treat diarrhea, rheumatism and menstrual disorders. It was highly prized in ancient Egypt for its medicinal purposes and it was given great value in trade. In medieval times, it was used as remedy for arthritis and sore throats.
Even today it is used for a host of different medical conditions. Cinnamon is used as an astringent, an antiseptic, a hemostatic and it generally has a reputation as a substance that aids in digestion. It helps to treat muscle spasms, vomiting, nausea infections, influenza, and even erectile dysfunction.
The actual medical benefits of cinnamon are not known. There have been small studies conducted in colleges and labs all over the world, but here has never been a major conclusive study that definitively states what the benefits of cinnamon are. All medical experts are in agreement over its general beneficial properties.
Many believe that it can help even out blood sugar in people with diabetes, but there are some who disagree. One study showed that people who consumed 6 grams of cinnamon per day reduced their cholesterol and triglyceride levels by a substantial amount.
Cinnamon might help prevent Alzheimer’s and it could be effective against HIV. People with multiple sclerosis sometimes use cinnamon, as it helps eliminate the need to take certain drugs.
One thing to watch out for is that cinnamon contain coumarin, which is linked to liver damage. Cassia contains over 50 times as much coumarin as Ceylon, which is one of the reasons why people vastly prefer Ceylon.
Coumarin does not affect everyone. Some people can take it and never feel any effects in the liver. But for many people, taking more coumarin than suggested over just a two week period can lead to liver problems. The problems are reversible, but it is enough to alarm medical experts around the globe.
Things to Look for in a Good Cinnamon Supplement
The first thing to do is to look at the ingredients. Ceylon is unquestionably healthier than cassia. You want to see the word ceylon or “cinnamomum verum” on the label. “Verum” means “true.” Some brands actually say they have ceylon “and/or” another type of cinnamon. Because ceylon is so expensive, you should assume that it has no ceylon and contains the other type of cinnamon in it.
When you open the bottle, if you can smell cinnamon, that’s a great sign. Cinnamon supplements that come in glass containers is also promising, as it retains freshness and doesn’t have the plastic contaminants.
How to Take Cinnamon Supplements
If you get a liquid form, make sure to shake it well. It is suggested that a person of average weight can take 6 mg of cinnamon per day. If you are taking cassia, be very careful not to exceed that amount.
There are no side effects to cinnamon supplements, though some people go to the bathroom more. Te supplement industry is riddled with fakes, so if you can, test yourself. If you are not seeing an effect on your blood sugar, than you might have a worthless supplement full of fillers.
Cinnamon supplements should not be taken by anyone who is pregnant or lactating. If you take any kind of medication, consult a doctor before using. Children should never take cinnamon bark.
