Summary: Phase 8 is Muscletech's top of the line whey protein powder.
What Is MuscleTech Phase 8?
It is well known in sports and nutritional science that different foods, and in this context, different proteins digest at different speeds once we eat them
MuscleTech Phase 8 has been formulated with this in mind, providing a variety of six different whey and casein proteins that each offer their own rate of digestion and subsequent absorption into the bloodstream.
In addition to this broad spectrum of digestive speeds, you’ll also benefit from the MuscleTech Digestive Enzyme Matrix which is features a simple combination of Papain and Amylase to help your body more effectively digest the proteins and get them to where they need to go; your muscle tissues!
Phase 8 Ingredients
If you know even the first thing about the rate at which different forms of protein are digested then the ingredients of Phase 8 should immediately be quite self-explanatory:
- Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate
- Whey Protein Isolate
- Whey Protein Concentrate
- Milk Protein Concentrate
- Calcium Caseinate
- Micellar Casein
- Digestive Enzyme Matrix, containing:
- Papain; and
How and When Do I Take It?
As per the manufacturer’s directions you are advised to take one heaping scoop with around 7oz of water; of course, you can also double up with two scoops and 14oz of water for a higher protein intake.
The amount of water you use with Phase 8 doesn’t necessarily have to be so exact but just ensure that you are consuming plenty of water throughout the day, and try not to neglect your hydration for a few hours before having to play catch up later on!
This protein powder can be used to boost your protein intake between meals or occasionally as a meal replacement and you might even like to consider using it pre-workout so that you have some easily-digestible proteins and amino acids in your bloodstream prior to hitting the gym.
Benefits of MuscleTech Phase 8
The most obvious benefit of Phase 8 is that you are going to be getting a quick burst of amino acids released into your bloodstream courtesy of the Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Isolate, while also enjoying a prolonged release of aminos from the casein proteins.
The easiest way to understand this is to look at the example of Hydrolyzed Whey Protein Isolate which is one of the fastest digesting whey proteins available.
This protein undergoes the process known as hydrolysis which means that it requires basically no digestion in the gut before being absorbed into the bloodstream more or less immediately.
Rapid absorption like this makes this protein ideal on its own for use in the intra-workout and post-workout periods, but the drop off rate is so quick that you’d almost certainly never want to use it during any other parts of the day.
On the other end of the spectrum, Calcium Caseinate and Micellar Casein congeal to form a gel in the stomach which results in a slow ‘trickle’ of amino acids into the bloodstream.
This is no good for those of us who want rapid entry of amino acids into the bloodstream, but of course it is ideal for use through the day when we want a steadier supply.
Combining these two extremes, with everything in the middle added for good measure, is a great way of covering all our bases.
Are there Any Precautions?
Note: Phase 8 is not to be used by pregnant or breastfeeding women.

MuscleTech Phase 8 Review
The premise upon which Phase 8 is based is a sound one for sure, and I absolutely love the idea.
Having said that, I’m not quite sure that there is a need to include six different proteins because combining just two or three may be just as effective while also making for a more cost-effective product.
It should also be noted that combining different proteins, as well as fats, carbohydrates, and fiber can significantly affect gastric emptying, or the rate at which food is processed through the gut.
With this in mind, I’d say that Phase 8 is a quality product that has some good science behind it, but in practice it might not provide exactly what you’re looking for unless used in isolation from other nutrients.
Protein powders really are a bodybuilder’s best friend, and so they are still just about the most efficient way of boosting your protein intake or for replacing meals when you don’t have the time or resources to prepare solid food.
The variety of proteins in this supplement also enables you to conjure up some very tasty recipes, covering everything from protein oatmeal to microwave protein brownies. The textures of the whey and casein proteins lend themselves perfectly to this kind of application.
By the way, be sure to Google “microwave protein brownies” if you haven’t tried it before; you’ll be in for a serious anabolic treat!
MuscleTech protein powders are always reliable when it comes to their taste and composition, usually coming out as creamy, velvety shakes that you’d be happy to drink all day long.
Milk Chocolate is usually my go-to flavor for protein because it is consistently tasty, but Peanut Butter Chocolate and Cookies and Cream really caught me by surprise; I don’t know if it’s the texture of the casein proteins but dang these two flavors are awesome!
Is it Worth the Money?
I tend to find this a tough question to answer when it comes to MuscleTech supplements because while they are decent they are a little overpriced in my opinion.
It’s easy to justify charging your customers a premium when you’ve got some of the world’s top bodybuilders as your endorsers, but for us regular Joes it really can leave a gaping hole in the pocket!
MuscleTech Phase 8 is a well formulated protein powder that you might be able to squeeze into your budget if you don’t use a whole lot of other supplements, but I would definitely recommend comparing it both in price and quality to comparable products to see if it is the right choice for you.
Phase 8 isn’t my personal protein of choice because I prefer to break things up a little and enjoy maybe two or three protein powders that offer varying rates of digestion depending on what I’m looking for.
Even so, it might be suitable for you if you can fit it into your budget and want a well rounded spectrum of milk-based proteins that will help you to ensure you consume enough protein throughout the day.
I don’t have a bad thing to say about the general quality of this supplement, and the flavors I’ve mentioned above are nothing short of fantastic, so all in all I would definitely recommend considering Phase 8 but like I said, run a few comparisons with some of the other proteins on our site before making your final purchase.
