What is Bilberry?

Bilberries are closely related to North American blueberries but are native to Northern Europe and certain parts of North America and Asia. The berry is darker in color, sometimes appearing almost black, and the pulp of the fruit is red or purple rather than the green color of blueberries.

Bilberries are sweet and tart, with a more intense flavor than blueberries.

Throughout history, bilberries and its leaves have been used for medicinal purposes, and also consumed as a food. It was thought that the fruit helped support eyesight and night vision, which caused British air pilots during World War II to eat bilberry jam. (1)

There is some evidence that the fruit can help with retinal disorders and cataracts. (2) However, there is less evidence supporting the idea that it benefits night vision.

Like blueberries, bilberries are rich in antioxidants and flavonoids, but each berry has different flavonoids that dominate the composition. Both contain a group of flavonoids called anthocyanins, but the dominant anthocyanin in bilberries is known as cyanin, while the dominant anthocyanin in blueberries is called malvidin. (3) Anthocyanins are found in blue-black fruits and berries, as well as purple vegetables.(4)

Cyanidin has the ability to decrease blood glucose levels without hindering muscle protein synthesis (4). Out of all anthocyanin compounds, it seems to have the greatest uptake rate and the most clinical significance. (4)

Basically, this means cyanidin seems to have the most effect on health, and bilberries are the richest natural source of it. (5)

Bilberry Uses

Bilberry has been used for a number of health purposes, but more research is necessary. These uses include:

  • Eye conditions: Bilberry may help with retinal disorders and cataracts. Several clinical trials have supported the use of bilberry for preventing diabetic retinopathy, and it is recognized in Europe as a treatment. (6) A few animal studies also suggest that diets high in anthocyanoside flavonoids retard the development of cataracts. (7, 8) There is some evidence that the berry can improve night vision, because it is high in flavonoids that speed the regeneration of the pigment used by eye for night vision – people with poor night vision have shown improvement when supplementing with bilberry. (9) However, much more research is necessary to determine bilberry benefits for eye health.
  • Cardiovascular health: Due to the fact that bilberry is one of the highest natural sources of cyanidin, the berry is of interest for supporting cardiovascular health. Cyanidin has been associated with a reduction in blood sugar levels and anti-diabetic effects. (4) A study on berries and cardiovascular health found that bilberries reduce blood sugar in patients with metabolic risk factors, such as type 1 and type 2 diabetes. (10) Additionally, bilberry has been shown to prevent platelet aggregation which can lead to hardening of the arteries, but human trials are needed. (9) Overall, more research is necessary.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Inflammation is a reaction of the immune system designed to protect and heal the body and involves white blood cells attacking foreign organisms. However, sometimes the body attacks itself, which can cause health problems. Like blueberries, bilberry has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory health benefits. A recent study found that bilberry extract has a potent protective effect on immunological inflammation, as well as beneficial effects on liver health. (11)

How to Take Bilberry

Bilberry can be consumed raw, cooked or dried. Bilberry supplements are available as extracts, powders and teas.

Dried bilberry has been consumed in studies at dosages of 20 to 60 grams daily, and bilberry extract dosages of 160 mg. In teas, 5 to 10 grams of mashed bilberry and 1 gram finely chopped dried leaf has been used.

In general, follow the instructions on the supplement and the directions of a doctor.

Side Effects and Precautions

The extract and leaf should not be consumed in large quantities over long periods of time due to the tannins contained. The tannins could cause weight loss and muscle spasms.

As with all supplements, we recommend you speak with a doctor before taking bilberry products.

What to Look for in a Good Bilberry Supplement

Due to the fact that bilberry has not been extensively studied, there is not a generally agreed upon perfect dosage. When checking out a bilberry product, make sure that the berries used are of quality and that the company doesn’t use unnecessary fillers, binders and preservatives.

Overall, review the brand that offers the product and find a company with a trustworthy reputation known for quality supplements.
