What Is Licorice Root?

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza Glabra) has been used for medicinal purposes in many cultures for over 2,500 years, and is considered by some herbalists as the ‘grandfather of herbs’. It was part of the rations for troops serving under Alexander the Great, and it has been mentioned in the writings of Pliny, Hippocrates, and Theophrastus.

North American tribes, Greeks and Romans all used Licorice help coughs, colds, and sore throats. Egyptian Pharaohs were sent into the afterlife with large quantities of licorice root in their tombs. The Babylonians, Chinese, Hindus, and Brahmans have all used licorice for thousands of years as an important medicine.

In India today, licorice is used to treat the patient’s throat before surgery to reduce inflammation of the throat from the breathing tube used during surgery.

Caution: Use of large quantities of Licorice can cause Sodium retention and potassium depletion, which might exacerbate hypertension or edema. People who are using Licorice regularly who have high blood pressure are encouraged to use it with a potassium supplement.

What To Look For in a Good Licorice Root Supplement

Licorice is effective when chewed and swallowed or when prepared as an infusion or as part of a blend of herbs to treat an ailment. As a supplement, the purity and dosage are more important than freshness, as dried licorice root has a shelf life longer than many other herbs. The things to watch for in quality supplements are:

  • Purity Unless a blend of herbs is desired, there is no need for other ingredients to be blended into the supplement. Fillers and binders have no practical purpose in a capsule with licorice.
  • Dosage A supplement that makes it easy to take the amount that you want is superior to a supplement that supplies more than you want at a time.
  • Quality As herbal supplements are not carefully monitored by government agencies, people should choose supplement providers carefully, keeping an eye on their reputation.

How To Take Licorice Root

Licorice is sometimes used topically, as a shampoo ingredient or in a cream applied to the skin, but it is usually taken orally. It can be taken as a simple infusion, or the powdered root can be taken in a pill or capsule.
