What is MSM?

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a form of naturally occurring sulfur found in the human body in living tissues. It is also found in small amounts in food sources such as dairy products, poultry, meat, fish, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts.

MSM has a specific function within the body’s tissues. It reduces pressure within the cells by making cell walls permeable so that that fluid can enter the cells and waste and toxins can be removed. In combination with vitamin C, the body uses MSM to create new cells and builds the flexible bond between cells.

As a dietary supplement, it is relatively new. Some health experts claim that there are a number of MSM benefits for health, including the support of healthy connective tissues. MSM is made synthetically for use in dietary supplements. The method used produces a nutrient which is the same as the one found in nature. The reason it is made by chemical synthesis for dietary supplements is because it is not commercially viable to extract it from plants or other natural sources. Typically, the method produces MSM by creating a chemical reaction between sulfur and methane.

Uses & Benefits of MSM

Because of its biochemical reactions inside the body, MSM supplement manufacturers claim that it has numerous health benefits. However, not all of them are supported by clinical research.

  • Osteoarthritis: This is the most common form of arthritis. In a 2006 study published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, fifty men and women suffering from osteoarthritis knee pain were given 3 g of MSM or placebo twice daily for a period of 12 weeks. The results showed that the participants who were given MSM experienced significantly reduced pain levels.
  • Hair loss: A 2009 laboratory study on mice showed that topical applications of magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) and MSM may be effective at promoting hair growth, and may be useful in alleviating the symptoms of hair loss disorders such as alopecia. More research is needed.
  • Allergies: Some manufacturers claim that MSM can be beneficial for those suffering from seasonal allergies. In a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 55 subjects suffering from allergic rhinitis were given 2,600 mg of MSM per day for 30 days. The results showed that by day 7, respiratory symptoms were reduced, and by day 14, energy levels had increased. This may indicate that MSM may help to alleviate symptoms of seasonal allergies. More studies are needed.
  • Antioxidant: As well as showing anti-inflammatory activity, MSM shows signs of being a potent antioxidant, capable of deactivating free radicals. MSM has also been shown to provide sulfur for other antioxidants such as glutathione, and the amino acids, taurine, methionine, and cysteine.
  • Digestive problems: MSM may help support the health of the digestive tract. Animal studies indicate that MSM may be beneficial for supporting a healthy GI tract lining in cases of ulcerative colitis. More research is needed.
  • Skin: Laboratory studies with animals show that MSM may be able to soften the skin and strengthen the nails. A 2008 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology suggests that MSM may help alleviate some of the symptoms of the skin condition rosacea.
  • Muscle recovery: Because of its powerful antioxidant activity, MSM may decrease the risk of muscle damage for athletes. Because levels of LDH and CK are typically elevated after intense exercise, MSM may be beneficial because it can help remove lactic acid, which is responsible for the burning sensation after exercise.
  • Autoimmune disease: Preliminary animal studies indicate that MSM may offer protection against autoimmune lymphoproliferative disease (ALD). Studies involving mice also show promise for MSM and protection from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Human trials are needed.

How to Take MSM

MSM can be taken in powder or capsule form. Although there is no standard recommended MSM supplement dosage, most manufacturers suggest an MSM dosage of between 1000 mg and 4000 mg per day. Once your body has used what it need, the rest will be flushed away within twelve hours. Always use your MSM supplement as directed.

MSM Side Effects and Precautions

MSM is generally considered safe when taken orally as directed. Common side effects include headache, upset stomach, or worsening of allergy symptoms. Serious reactions are rare, and overdose is extremely unlikely as excess MSM passes from the body within 12 hours. You should seek medical treatment if you experience swelling of the face, tongue and neck, skin rash, itching, dizziness, or trouble breathing.

Avoid taking MSM if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

No information on MSM and drug interactions is available.

What to Look for in a Good MSM Supplement

Look for a quality MSM supplement that is manufactured in a facility that is dedicated and certified cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) compliant facility. Also, look for products that are third-party tested to ensure purity and absence of toxins. Finally look for an MSM supplement that is organic and does not contain additives or unnecessary fillers
