What is Mucuna Pruriens?

Mucuna Pruriens is a fuzzy bean pod that’s itchy to the touch grows from trees in India, Africa and the Caribbean, where it originated.

Known as velvet bean, its scientific name is Mucuna Pruriens, and it is a member of the legume family.

The beans within the pod have been historically used in traditional medicine.

The plant has been naturalized and cultivated in North America. It currently grows in Florida, Mississippi and the Carolinas as well.

It has many names, including cowhage, Cowitch, Werepe, Karara and Agbara (1).

The plant is technically a climbing shrub and can grow by wrapping its vines around trees.

The uncooked bean contains a chemical compound called L-DOPA – a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine (2, 3). In addition to being rich in L-DOPA, Mucuna Pruriens also contain a number of alkaloids and flavonoids (3), and has a high antioxidant content (2).

The bean also contains the neurotransmitter serotonin and its precursor, 5-HTP (2), but in low amounts.

When consumed as a food, cooking is required in order to destroy trypsin inhibitors in the beans so that protein absorption is not hindered. However, when cooked, the L-DOPA content is also destroyed.

The bean contains a good amount of protein – about 20-35% of the calories in the bean comes from protein (4).

For human use, Mucuna Pruriens has mostly been studied for its effects on sperm, testosterone, stress, and mental health.

There is also interest in its potential benefits for those with Parkinson’s disease.

The plant does interact with other pharmaceuticals (1), so if you are on medications, be sure to check with your doctor before taking Mucuna Pruriens.

Uses of Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna Pruriens has a number of uses, but many need additional research to confirm benefits. These uses include:

  • Mental health: Due to Mucuna Pruriens L-DOPA content, there is interest in its potential benefits for mental health. A recent study using mice determined that Mucuna Pruriens has a high potential of antidepressant activity, specifically through its effects on dopamine (5). However a study published two years earlier found that L-DOPA does not affect positive mood in humans (6). Mucuna Pruriens also appears to be able to reduce cortisol (commonly referred to as the stress hormone), which may help those with anxiety (7). However, much more research is necessary, and it is important to note that Mucuna Pruriens is known to interact with depression and antipsychotic drugs (1).
  • Male fertility: Up to 15 percent of couples are considered infertile, which is generally defined by the inability to conceive after having unprotected sex for a year. In over a third of these cases, male infertility plays role (8). Male infertility can be due to low sperm production or quality, hormone imbalances or blockages in the testes (9). Mucuna Pruriens appears to increase sperm quality and decrease psychological stress in infertile men (10, 11, 12). It also has been shown to increase testosterone levels in infertile men, but it is unclear if the same effect would occur on fertile men. Overall, more research is needed, but Mucuna Pruriens shows promise for supporting male fertility.
  • Parkinson’s disease: Parkinson’s disease is a central nervous system disorder that affects movement in a number of ways. It can cause tremors, slowed movement, rigid muscles, impaired posture and balance, loss of reflex movements and speech and writing changes (13). Mucuna Pruriens has shown to notably decrease symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, theoretically due to L-DOPA content (14, 15, 16). However, there is insufficient evidence for this use as of now – there needs to be more studies.

How to Take Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna Pruriens in a dried powder form is typically taken in studies at 5 grams for Parkinson’s disease and fertility support. Doses higher than that have also been used.

Follow the supplement instructions, or the directions of a doctor.

Side Effects and Precautions

Mucuna Pruriens interacts with other medications for depression and antipsychotic drugs.

The most common side effects are nausea and abdominal bloating, abnormal body movements and insomnia.

What to Look for in a Good Mucuna Pruriens Supplement

When searching for a good Mucuna Pruriens supplement, it is important to look for products made by reliable companies.

Research the supplement brand in question.

Also, check the label to see how much Mucuna Pruriens you are getting, and how much L-DOPA content it has.

Mucuna Pruriens products are available in pills, powders and liquid extracts, so determine what best fits your needs as well.
