What is Nattokinase?

Nattokinase is an enzyme which was originally extracted from a traditional Japanese food known as natto. Natto is produced during the fermentation process of boiled soybeans and the beneficial bacteria Bacillus natto, the resulting cheese-like food has been eaten in Japan for centuries. It is also renowned in Japanese folk medicine for treating heart and vascular disease.

Natto is made by soaking soybeans (you can also use black beans, kidney beans, or adzuki beans) then steaming them and adding the bacteria Bacillus subtilis. The mixture must then be allowed to ferment. Natto is an acquired taste. Many people find the pungent smell rather off-putting.

After years of searching for a natural agent that could eliminate blood clots associated with stroke and heart attacks, Doctor Hiroyuki Sumi discovered nattokinase in 1980, while conducting research at Chicago University Medical School.

Today nattokinase is available as a dietary supplement.

Uses & Benefits of Nattokinase

Though few, there are some nattokinase benefits, such as:

  • Blood Pressure: In a 2008 study published in Hypertension Research, 86 participants between 20 and 80 years of age who were suffering from untreated systolic blood pressure, were given 2,000 FU (Fibrinolysis Units) per capsule of nattokinase or placebo for eight weeks. The results showed that nattokinase may play a role in preventing and treating hypertension. The same study also revealed that nattokinase may lower levels of renin in persons with hypertension. Renin helps to balance the blood’s sodium and potassium levels. High levels of renin will increase blood pressure. More research is needed.
  • Seasonal allergies: Nasal-related problems and sinus conditions can arise at certain times of year, depending on the weather and pollen situation. Such problems can often turn into sinus inflammation and chronic rhinitis, also known as nasal polyps. A 2017 study published in Allergology International showed that nattokinase may be helpful in treating nasal polyps.
  • Blood clots: A blood clot, also known as a thrombus, forms when strands of the protein fibrin build up in the circulatory system. This type of clot can prevent the normal flow of blood. This, in turn, cuts off the oxygen supply to the surrounding tissue, which eventually dies. If this happens in the heart, it can cause a heart attack. If it happens in the brain is can result in a stroke. Deep vein thrombosis can cause blood clots in the lungs. A 2014 clinical trial, sponsored by the University of Southern California, showed that nattokinase may help to prevent the formation of these types of blood clots.

How to Take Nattokinase

There is no standardized recommended daily nattokinase supplement dosage. According to Examine.com, studies suggest that the optimum nattokinase dosage is 500mg or 5,000 FU (Fibrinolysis Units) each day, divided into two equal doses. These are to be taken with meals for best results.

Nattokinase Side Effects and Precautions

Nattokinase is considered to be safe if taken orally in the suggested dosage. Because of the lack of reliable information, you should avoid taking nattokinase if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

You should also not take this supplement if you suffer from a bleeding disorder, if you are currently taking blood thinners, or if you are scheduled for surgery within the next two weeks.

What to Look for in a Good Nattokinase Supplement

If you are looking for an effective nattokinase supplement, you should find one that contains a minimum of 2000 FU nattokinase. This refers to the number of fibrin units the tablets contain and is the way that most nattokinase manufacturers express the activity of their supplements.

These days, most nattokinase supplements are available in 100 mg capsules which have a range of 2,000-4,000 FU. You should also avoid nattokinase supplements which contain unnecessary fillers.
