What is Pomegranate?

Pomegranate is one of the most nutritious fruits on the planet. The red-skinned fruit is grown on a shrub or small tree that can grow to over 30 feet in height. Pomegranate is native to Iran but is also cultivated in other regions of the world.

The fruit itself is a berry that grows to be between the size of a lime and a grapefruit. It’s generally not thought of as a berry due to its size, but pomegranate is technically a berry.

The edible fruit of the pomegranate is surrounded by a thick husk, which has two parts: an outer, hard pericarp, and an inner, spongy mesocarp, which comprise the inner wall of the fruit where the arils are attached. Arils are the edible seeds contained inside the pomegranate.

These pomegranate seeds are the only edible part of the pomegranate and are known to be sweet and flavorful. The amount of sugar is one reason that supplements with the extract are recommended instead of pomegranate juice.

When used in supplements, pomegranate is extracted from the peel, the seed, and sometimes a blend of both. This allows manufacturers to extract beneficial nutrients from parts of the pomegranate that aren’t edible on their own.

Pomegranate has documented use throughout history, as far back as 1500 BC, where pomegranate was used as treatment for parasites such as tapeworm.

Pomegranate is consumed for its nutritional and medicinal value. It has many documented benefits, and other claimed benefits that have not been evaluated by clinical studies.

Uses & Benefits of Pomegranate

Pomegranate has a lot of potential uses, some of which are more proven than others. Some pomegranate benefits include:

  • Arthritis and Joint Pain: One study highlights the benefits of pomegranate fruit extract and it was shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects (1). Another study showed that pomegranate extract protects cartilage and inhibits arthritis (2).
  • Inflammation: Chronic inflammation is a cause of many harmful diseases. Studies have shown pomegranate has strong anti-inflammatory properties, most of which are given by the antioxidants in the punicalagins (3).
  • Muscle Recovery: At the University of Texas a study was performed where weightlifters were given either 500 mg of pomegranate or a placebo in order to gauge pomegranate benefits for recovery (4). After 5 days the researchers had the participants perform rigorous exercise. Following the workout, the researchers tracked the lifters strength recovery. They discovered that the placebo consumers did not recover as well as the lifters who took the 500 mg of pomegranate. This suggests that pomegranate may have beneficial effects on post-workout recovery, but more research is needed.
  • Memory: In this study it was shown that 2 g of pomegranate extract prevents gaps in memory following surgery (5). This effect can likely be attributed to pomegranate’s high antioxidant content, which another study three times as potent as green tea or red wine (6). More research with long-term clinical models is needed to evaluate these results.
  • Blood Pressure: It was found in this study that consistent use of pomegranate has lowered blood pressure levels in as little as two weeks (7). More research is needed.

There are more benefits that are claimed, but they do not have adequate clinical evidence to back them up.

In general, pomegranate supplements need more research before we know their full potential of benefits.

How to Take Pomegranate

Pomegranate supplements come in powder, pill, or capsule form. They should be taken following the manufacturer recommendations.

The daily dosage for pomegranate is not established. Although, this study used 710 – 1,420 mg of pomegranate extract per day (8).

Keep in mind, some parts of the pomegranate used to create the extract may be more potent than others, so effectiveness of dose may vary.

Side Effects and Precautions

Pomegranate supplements are typically safe when consumed by mouth or used topically on skin.

Some people are allergic to pomegranate and may have a reaction.

Symptoms may include itching, swelling, and trouble breathing.

There is not enough reliable information about pomegranate extract in pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Also, pomegranate may affect blood pressure.

Be sure to check with your physician before using pomegranate supplements.

What to Look for in a Good Pomegranate Supplement

To find the best pomegranate product, you will want to find companies that are trusted and well-established in the health and wellness community. Keeping that in mind, we have chosen some products by companies that are reputable in the industry.
